FlyGirls: Girls with Drones

What is FlyGirls & FlyGirls R.P.V.?

The Cobb STEM and Innovation Department launched the FlyGirls program in 2018.  FlyGirls was developed to introduce young women in grades four through eight to aerospace using drones.  The sky is the limit for these young women who learn how to fly, code and operate their drones safely.  Through generous funding from Lockheed Martin, participants received training and a free Parrot Mambo mini drone.

The STEM Cobb team tries to host at least one face to face FlyGirls event each year.  Our first two face to face events introduced some 200 young women from all over Metro-Atlanta to aerospace and drones.  We have plans to host a future FlyGirls event in the Spring of 2023.  This past year we returned to a face to face FlyGirls event.  During the pandemic, we were able to pivot and offer a virtual version of our event called FlyGirls R.P.V. (Remote Person View).  We met with young women who had already been a part of a face to face FlyGirls event on Saturday mornings through Zoom.  Our young women were introduced to female drone pilots who used drones in their jobs.  Then our FlyGirls went out on missions related to those careers.  You can read more about our experiences in the news section below.

Rooftop Challenge

Meet Niki Calvillo an insurance adjuster for Travelers Insurance.  She is a licensed drone pilot that uses her drones to go head to head with mother nature! She has challenged our FlyGirls to show our piloting and videography skills to show the power of mother nature on structures.

Habitat Hunt

FlyGirls are going to channel our inner Caitlin Burke, a wetlands ecologist, and investigate a wetland area.  We'll delineate (outline) the boundary of the wetland and note interesting plants, animals and/or structures we see.

You can’t have an awesome drone course without obstacles! Obstacles can separate the best of the best drone pilots when it comes to control, maneuvering in and around the course and stamina or being able to last until the end. Some cool obstacles you may find on a drone course are: hurdles, super hurdles, gates, split-s gates, double gates, offset 90 gates, flags, cones, towers, double gate towers, ladders, topless ladders, dive gates and launch gates. That is a lot of obstacles!

There are many ways to tell a story and drones are good tools for setting the stage for your story. So, drones are not just for establishing shots anymore! Drone storytelling is a popular event.  When telling a story with your drone, there are five essential storytelling drone shots that will enhance the creativity of your scenes. These five storytelling drone shots are called: (1) the reveal, (2) tilt reveal, (3) top down, (4) the orbit and (5) tilt while tracking.

You asked for it, so here it is.  We want to see what you can do with your drone.  Can you make it dance?  How about a Tik-Tok? Can you write a code for your drone? There are so many creative ways that you can use your drone.

You've got up to 45 sec to show us what you can do!

Want a drone of your very own?

We've partnered with FTW Robotics to provide our FlyGirls with Parrot Mambo drones.  FTW is the exclusive supplier of Parrot drones.  FlyGirls who were part of our RPV program received camera attachments for their drones.  You can learn more about FTW Robotics and the many drone related resources they have to offer on their website.
