ES/MS Construction Workshop*
*Cobb Employees Only

By: Anthony Coley
K-8th  |  9:00 AM - 12:00 PM | Room 537
How can construction skills improve a student’s math performance? Imagine calculating the pitch and rise of stair treads, converting the units of measurement for the length of conduits and lumber, determining the volume of forms for concrete pours, and assessing the amperage and capacity of wiring. Every level of math is applied in construction, which makes it an outstanding platform for strengthening a student’s math performance. Join Construction Ready and the Kennesaw Mountain High School Construction program as they introduce simple carpentry skills that can easily be introduced in middle school math/science classrooms. Participants will walk away with unit lesson designs that fit math standards, practical experience in using simple carpentry skills, cool “toys” to use in the classroom, and, finally, the answer to the question, “When will I use this?”

6-12th  |  June 15, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM | Room 921(Orchestra)
We would like to invite any 8th grade science or HS forensics teacher (who has not yet been trained) to participate in our partnership with UL (Underwriters Laboratories) and Cobb County Fire Department. UL is a consumer safety and product testing company that has developed a FREE curriculum (Xplorlabs) related to fire safety that correlates well with 8th grade science standards and HS Forensics. The Cobb County Fire Department has partnered with UL and began working with all of our middle schools over the past several years. Firefighters participate in the labs with students and bring real world application to what the students are learning!
