STEM Tour of Lanier HS & White Oak ES

4/14/2015

These two schools were kind enough to invite a team from Cobb to come and visit their campuses.  We saw innovative learning spaces and engaged students.  Lanier HS is a GA STEM Certified Program.  They are doing a variety of cool things at Lanier - like investigating "Seniors don't come to school - for next year.  And hosting a Makerfair.

White Oak ES is a school that wasn't sure if it should call itself STEM.  They have called themselves an "Inquiry School."  The entire team was very impressed with all they have been working on.  Here's a link to some of their Inquiry Resources - http://staceypickett1.wix.com/showtime.

Cooper Middle School - Cobb County

Members of the Cobb STEM team were invited out to Cooper Middle to observe their STEM program in action.  We visited for a little over an hour and saw STEM students in 7th and 8th grade.
Some of the strengths we saw during our visit were as follows:
  • Evidence of Rigorous Curriculum Expectations – Ocean project, Shepard Spinal Center Project, Structure
  • Evidence of frequent collaboration among students – PBL learning
  • Evidence of technology integration – iPads for research or use as needed, students as producers of digital content
  • Evidence of College and Career opportunities
  • Evidence of use of STEM Notebooks

Opportunities for Growth included:
  • Technology Integration – While students are comfortable using the iPads, evidence of more consistent use of a variety of technology tools by students is  needed.   Students need opportunities to act as producers of digital content more frequently.
  • Business & Community Partnerships – look for opportunities to invite additional partners into the school to engage in and enhance learning opportunities

Memorial Middle School - Rockdale County

Memorial Middle School is working toward earning STEM Certification.  They were recommended as a school to visit by the GA DOE.  We were very impressed with their students in the STEM program.  A unique feature of MMS is focusing on the research aspect of STEM.  While students do traditional STEM challenges and engage in an enriched STEM curriculum, they also spend a great deal of time research, debating, and presenting their research.  It was quite impressive.  Many of the programs and teacher allotments currently in use at MMS were the result of RT3 funding.

Please view the Padlet below to see the things we observed on our visit.
